At the threshold …. What is the future of freight in the South East?
The current discussion of a National Transport Plan, the Eddington Report and the creation of Infrastructure Australia has turned the focus yet again to the challenges of freight and the movement of goods in the south east region of Melbourne.
SED held a breakfast forum on the 21st April 2008 at Woodlands Golf Club to consider these challenges and to hear what might happen in the future. Seventy five people attended from business, industry, government and the community.
The forum provided a visual representation of freight movement in the south east – volumes and projections, issues and opportunities – and looked at how operators will have to shift their focus to meet the future transport challenges.
Guest speakers were Rose Elphick, CEO, Victorian Freight and Logistics Council and Fotios Spiridonos, Manager of Transport Modelling & Analysis, Department of Infrastructure.
Attendees made the following comments about what they had learn from the forum:
“I thought it really gave us some lessons on the future of road transport. I was amazed by the very clear hubs and how busy Dandenong was.”
“The freight task and its economic value is still not fully understood at a regional level.”
“In a few years time, every fourth or sixth vehicle on our roads will be a B double”.
”Movement of freight on our roads is big and will only intensify”.
